Top 5 Girls Weekend Getaways

Top 5 Girls Weekend Getaways

By Aleks Brook

Everyone leads such busy lives these days and as a woman, your needs are often on the bottom of the pile (after your husbands work event or your daughter's ballet class) but there is nothing quite so rewarding as carving out an entire weekend to go away with good girlfriends. Here are 5 top girls weekend destinations:

1.     Byron Bay

Byron Bay has all the key elements for a great girls’ weekend -beach, shopping, great restaurants & bars, luxe accommodation & good spas.

I have stayed at The Byron at Byron Resort and it fits the bill perfectly with their Day Spa, morning yoga class, infinity pool, walk to the beach and fantastic Happy Hour cocktails- they even do a Girls Getaway package complete with spa treatments, sparkling wine, cheese platters and chocolates.

Try and time your stay with Byron Bay markets usually held 1st Sunday of the month as they have some great food, art and clothes. The shops of Byron Bay are worth a wander around also.

You must do the iconic walk to Cape Byron Lighthouse- the most easterly point of Australia.  After the walk, I recommend lunch at The Italian Byron Bay followed by one of their decadent dessert cocktails ( my favourite is the Lemon Meringue Pie).

2.     Melbourne

Melbourne is the perfect girl’s city break and the shopping capital of Australia. You can easily spend a day exploring the shops of Melbourne-check out The Melbourne GPO, Flinders Lane & Little Collins St for boutique shops, Chapel St and Bourke St Mall for more mainstream shops such as David Jones & Myer.

After a day of shopping head to Hopetoun Tea Rooms for high tea or try one of Melbourne’s secret little bars such as the uber-cool Berlin Bar or rooftop garden party bar Madame Brussels.

Stay at The Langham for a weekend of luxury and indulge at their Chuan Spa & wellness centre – complete with swimming pool and killer views.

If you’re up for a bit of a road trip then drive 90 mins out of Melbourne and go to the award-winning natural hot springs of Peninsula Hot Springs for the day.

3.     Hunter Valley

What says girls weekend more than wine and great food! The wine region of the Hunter Valley is a 3- hour drive from Sydney or 1hr 30mins from Newcastle Airport.

The first thing to do is take a wine tour- Two Fat Blokes does a good range of tours. Their Progressive Winemakers tour includes visits to 4 wineries and then a 9 -course degustation lunch with matching wines.

For the foodies try the outdoor cooking class at Majors Lane Cooking School or for those in need of pampering head to Golden Door Health Retreat & Elysia Spa. You can choose to stay and immerse yourself in the full health retreat or just come for a day treatment.

Stay at somewhere like Crowne Plaza Hunter Valley with their villa style accommodation, large pool, spa and restaurant.

4.     Noosa

I admit I am biased as I live here but Noosa makes a great Girls Weekend Away.  Stay at Peppers Noosa in their villa style accommodation and enjoy the views over Main Beach. It is an easy walk down to Hastings St to take in a bit of shopping and I recommend dinner at Hastings St Italian restaurant Locale. Walk to Noosa Junction for some cool bars such as the new Eddie Cheebas or Village Bicycle. A must do is the walk through the Noosa National Park to Hell’s Gate-it has stunning ocean views all the way and stop along the way at the rock pools known as the Fairy Pools for a swim. Ikatan Day Spa is really magical and can do high teas, mezze plates and wine by the glass as well as an amazing array of treatments.

5.     Health Retreat

If you want to be really virtuous then you could do a Health Retreat for the weekend. A friend of mine runs fantastic yoga & wellness retreats at luxury properties in Bowral or Port Stephens in NSW. She and I have also done a week retreat at Gwinganna Retreat in the Gold Coast Hinterland and I have to say I have never felt so chilled out in my life-Gwinganna run a great Wellness Weekend too.

Olivia Newton-John’s Gaia Retreat in the Byron Bay Hinterland is probably one of the most famous health retreats in Australia and they offer a number of 2 or 3-night packages.

Great little read, only you missed Port Macquarie, rather PMQ Byron is full of backpackers in party mode. PMQ as the River and beaches. Beautiful retreats cheap motel accommodation, pet friendly. Eating out, so many great reastrauts we have it all from fish and chips, to five star Restrauts , plus the family fav’s hungry jacks, red rooster and more. Especially this time of year. I’ve lived here all my life, best time to visit not to hot not to cold is from April to the end of November. Can send you some snaps.
